Derek has been in the construction business for more than 30 years. As a trade qualified builder, LBP, Site 1 licence. He hails from Ireland and worked there and in Holland and Germany, before coming to New Zealand for the Christchurch post-earthquake rebuild. He was soon headhunted for senior roles in the commercial building sector, but dreamt of founding his own company so he could offer a more holistic approach, with future-proofing and client satisfaction as its ethos.
Now a family business where husband, wife and a son are all involved, Armstrong and Wolfe also have other fathers and son teams on staff. This makes for an easy and companionable work environment. Derek and Edel have also formed solid relationships with their team of sub-trades – people they can rely on to come when needed because they know Armstrong and Wolfe will be organised and ready for them.
The core team has been together for about five years and have the experience and qualifications to teach and mentor apprentices. Armstrong and Wolfe apprentices learn all aspects of the trade from the ground up. And it’s about more than just building, as they develop social skills and correct on-the-job behavior.
Derek has everyone’s trust – he has been in their shoes and knows how to make each build the best it can be, for employees, sub-trades and clients.
Her major role is taking care of business, handling administration and accounts, liaising with and scheduling sub-trades and ensuring everything is prepared for their arrival onsite, so they can start work without delay. Edel manages all the interior procurement of building materials and is always keenly aware of what will be needed and when. Her specialist skill is client liaison –listening to their needs and ideas and able to translate any building jargon into layman’s terms. She’ll often suggest small details for improving domestic life, such as maximising storage, allowing for an e-scooter charger or supplying central tech-chargings area for multiple devices. A well practised design eye provides assistance to owners seeking appealing interior looks and colours that also are in keeping with the building’s exterior. She’ll even take them on pre-arranged visits to suppliers to show them finishings like tiles, paint, flooring, tap choices and kitchen fitouts that are not only stylish but hit the budget. She also handles staff welfare, Health and Safety requirements and first-aid training with Site Safe.
